How to Plan a Winter Road Trip: Snow and Sun Routes

The Overseas Highway crossing the turquoise shallows of the Florida Keys, a warm winter road trip

A winter road trip works one of two ways. You chase dry, mild weather on roads that stay open all year, or you drive into the snow with proper tires, a loaded kit, and a plan that bends when the forecast does. Both are good trips. The mistake is picking a famous summer road, driving to the trailhead in January, and finding the gate shut since October.

This guide covers how to choose a winter-friendly route, which famous drives close for the season, how to ready the car, and how to pace a trip around four fewer hours of daylight.

Two kinds of winter road trip

The first decision shapes everything after it. You can leave the cold behind, or you can lean into it.

Chase the sun. Several of the best drives peak in the northern winter, because winter is their dry, mild season. The Overseas Highway across the Florida Keys runs best from November to April, 230 km over 42 bridges with turquoise flats on both sides. Death Valley is unbearable in summer, when temperatures top 48°C, and comfortable from October to April. Mexico's Baja California Highway 1 traces 1,700 km of Pacific surf, Sea of Cortez lagoons, and grey whale sanctuaries from October through April.

Drive into the snow. A snow trip is a different kind of plan. You trade easy logistics for frozen waterfalls, empty passes, and roads most people only drive in summer. It asks for winter tires, chains in some regions, and the discipline to turn back when a pass report says no. More on the gear below.

If you are not sure, chase the sun for a first winter trip. The margin for error is wider and the driving is easier.

Winter road trips that stay open all season

These windows come straight from each route's recommended season. Use them as a starting point, then check local conditions the week you leave.

Costa Rica's dry season runs December to April, the right months to drive 600 km from San José up to the Arenal Volcano and the Monteverde cloud forest. Northern Thailand's Mae Hong Son Loop is coolest and clearest from November to January, before the burning-season haze arrives in spring. Both swap a grey northern winter for green.

Which famous roads close for winter

The commonest winter-planning mistake is assuming a famous road is open. Many of the world's great drives are summer-only, gated or snowed shut for months.

  • The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is open roughly July to September. The rest of the year it is snowed in above Avalanche Creek.
  • Romania's Transfăgărășan runs July to October and is closed by snow from November to June.
  • Montana's Beartooth Highway opens late May to mid-October and can shut without notice even in summer.
  • Austria's Grossglockner High Alpine Road runs early May to early November, weather permitting, then closes its gates.
  • Iceland's Ring Road is a summer drive, June to September. Winter laps are possible only with specialist planning and the right vehicle.

Norway's Trollstigen (May to October), the Icefields Parkway in Canada (June to September), and the high passes of the Dolomites follow the same pattern. If your heart is set on one of these, plan it for summer and save winter for a road that wants you there now.

How to prepare your car for winter driving

Even a sun-chasing route can cross a cold, high stretch. Route 66 stays easy to drive, but winter brings snow and ice to northern Illinois and the higher ground in Arizona and New Mexico, and fuel stops thin out across the desert.

For any trip with real winter weather:

  • Fit winter or all-season tires rated for snow, and carry chains where mountain roads require them.
  • Pack a cold-weather kit: a blanket, extra layers, water, food, a torch, an ice scraper, and a small shovel.
  • Keep the tank above half through remote stretches, where stations are far apart and some close off-season.
  • Check the coolant, washer fluid, battery, and wiper blades before you set off.

Plan around shorter daylight

Winter days are short. In December, mid-northern latitudes get four or more fewer hours of daylight than in June, so a leg that felt relaxed in summer can finish in the dark.

Drive the scenic stretches in the middle of the day, and keep each leg shorter than you would in summer. Avoid long, unfamiliar mountain sections after sunset. Baja California's own advice is to drive only in daylight, and that gets harder to honour the shorter the days get, so build in extra time. If you are working out distances, our guide on how many hours to drive per day counts double in winter, so plan for less.

If you only do one winter drive

Drive the Overseas Highway. It is warm and open when much of the map is frozen, it needs no special vehicle, and the whole run from Florida City to Key West fits a long weekend. For a first winter trip, nothing else pairs such easy driving with that much payoff.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do a road trip in winter?

Yes. Pick a route whose dry, mild season falls in winter, like the Florida Keys or Baja California, or prepare for snow with winter tires and a cold-weather kit. The trap is driving a summer-only mountain road in the off-season, when it may be gated or snowed shut.

What is the best winter road trip?

For easy driving and warm weather, the Overseas Highway across the Florida Keys is hard to beat from November to April. If you prefer desert to coast, Death Valley and Baja California are both at their most comfortable from October to April.

How do I prepare my car for a winter road trip?

Fit tires rated for snow, carry chains where they are required, and pack a kit with a blanket, layers, water, food, an ice scraper, and a small shovel. Check the battery, coolant, washer fluid, and wiper blades, and keep the fuel tank above half on remote stretches.

Which famous roads are closed in winter?

High mountain drives are the usual casualties. The Going-to-the-Sun Road, the Transfăgărășan, the Beartooth Highway, the Grossglockner, and Iceland's Ring Road are all summer routes, snowed in or gated for much of the cold half of the year.

Where can I drive to escape winter?

Head for a route whose season peaks in the northern winter. The Florida Keys and Death Valley run from October or November into April, Baja California covers the same stretch, and Costa Rica's dry season opens in December. For a long-haul option, northern Thailand's Mae Hong Son Loop is coolest from November to January.
