ニュージーランド
クライストチャーチを起点に、Southern Alps を Lewis Pass と Arthur's Pass 経由で巡る4日間の周遊ルート。森林、湖、川、そして West Coast Wilderness Trail を通り抜ける、ニュージーランド屈指の山岳横断路の2つを楽しめる。宿泊地点は Hanmer Springs の温泉プールで、帰路では State Highway 73 を通って Kumara のゴールドラッシュの歴史に触れられる。

- Christchurch
2010〜11年の地震から復興を進めるガーデンシティ。段ボールで作られた Transitional Cathedral と、Avon 川でのポンティングが、しなやかに生まれ変わる街の象徴です。
- Hanmer Springs
松林に囲まれた山の窪地にあるアルプスの温泉村。歴史あるロッジを起点に、地熱プールやハイキングトレイルが広がります。Lewis Pass の前泊に最適です。
- Lewis Pass
南島のアルプス横断路の中で最も標高が低く、最も森林に覆われた峠。864メートルの地点を、ブナ林と川の渓谷の中を通ります。晴れた朝には、道路脇でアカシカや kea が見られます。
- Reefton
1888年に Inangahua River の水力で公共電力を供給した、南半球で最初の町。ゴールドラッシュ時代の街並みとクラフトビールがそのまま残っています。
- Greymouth
West Coast 最大の町で、Grey River 河口にある石炭と木材の港町。Monteith's Brewery はクラフトビールの名所で、Punakaiki の pancake rocks は北へ43 km の場所にあります。
- Kumara
1866年に40,000オンスの金を産出したゴールドラッシュの町。歴史的な劇場と街並みが残り、West Coast Wilderness Trail が Westland 一帯と結んでいます。
- Arthur's Pass Village
Southern Alps の標高920メートルにあるアルプスの村で、国立公園に囲まれています。kea が無人の車を調べ回り、下りは Waimakariri River の渓谷に沿ってクライストチャーチへ戻ります。

旅行アドバイス
Arthur's Pass と Lewis Pass は、6月から9月にかけて雪や氷の影響を受けることがあります。越える前に NZTA の道路状況を確認してください。両峠とも舗装されていますが、特に Arthur's Pass は急勾配と急カーブが多く、雨天や凍結時には慎重な運転が必要です。
