ラダックには、シュリーナガルやマナリからのドライブ以上に驚きが待っています。まるで岩と氷でできているかのようなハイウェイが、5,359 m のカルドゥン・ラを越えて北へと苦労しながら進みます。ここは世界で最も標高の高い車両通行可能な峠と言われ、エベレスト・ベースキャンプとほぼ同じ高度にあります。その向こう側に広がるヌブラ渓谷は、まるで時間が止まったかのような世界です。仏教寺院、沙棘の茂み、ときおり見かけるヒトコブラクダが点在する砂地の盆地です。

- Leh
標高3,524mのラダックの首都。9階建ての宮殿跡の下にある白壁の町です。カルドゥン・ラに挑戦する前に2日間、高度順応してください。
- South Pullu Check Post
峠のLeh側にある軍の検問所で、カルドゥン・ラへの最後の登りの前に Inner Line Permits が確認されます。
- Khardung La
標高5,359m、世界でも最も高い車両通行可能な峠のひとつ。祈祷旗、軍のチャイ売店、はるか下の Shyok 渓谷の眺めが広がります。
- Diskit Monastery
Shyok と Nubra の合流点の上に建つ14世紀のゲルク派僧院で、32mの弥勒仏が谷の砂丘を見下ろしています。
- Hunder
二こぶのバクトリアンキャメルが標高3,100mの砂丘を歩き回り、背後にはカラコルム山脈がそびえます。シルクロードが不思議なほど実感できます。

旅行アドバイス
カルドゥン・ラを越えるには、Leh District Collector の許可が必要で、少なくとも1日前までに取得しなければなりません。道路の路面は高地では荒れて崩れやすく、5,359 m の頂上付近では一年中氷の斑点が出ることがあります。高山病は現実的なリスクです。まず Leh で少なくとも2日間、高度順応してください。
