This classic northern Ethiopia loop links the country’s greatest historic sites with dramatic highland scenery. Starting in Addis Ababa, the drive runs through Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Falls, Gondar’s imperial castles, the Simien Mountains, and onward to Axum, Lalibela, and back through the highlands.

- Addis Ababa
Set out from Ethiopia's busy capital, where highland roads begin to climb north. It's the natural launch point for the historic circuit.
- Bahir Dar
A relaxed lakeside city on the edge of Lake Tana. Its palm-lined boulevards and easy pace make a good first overnight.
- Lake Tana
Ethiopia's largest lake is dotted with monasteries and fishing boats. Morning light over the water feels calm and timeless.
- Blue Nile Falls

A major highland hub with good services and a convenient stop on the long return south. It breaks up the mountain drive neatly.
- Lalibela
End at the famed rock-hewn churches, carved into the highland bedrock. Lalibela is the spiritual highlight of the entire circuit.

Road conditions can vary sharply outside the main corridors, and day-to-day travel may be slowed by mountain terrain, traffic, and occasional fuel or checkpoint delays. In the wet season, allow extra time for the Axum and Simien approaches.
