分離独立を求める気運と独立への強い意思は、長くスコットランドの南隣国に対する特徴であり続けてきました。このハイランドを巡るドライブでは、1297年にスコットランド軍がイングランドに対して初の決定的勝利を収めたスターリングの Wallace Monument から、グレンコーの虐殺の地やジャコバイトの地を経て、スコットランド最後の戦いの舞台であるカローデン、そしてインヴァネスへ向かいます。

- Stirling
スコットランドの歴史の中心地。Wallace Monument は1297年のスターリング橋の戦いを記念しています。火山性の岩山の上にある城は、メアリー・スチュアートの幼少期の住まいでした。
- Bannockburn
ロバート・ザ・ブルースが1314年にエドワード2世に勝利した、スコットランド史上最も決定的な戦いです。NTS センターには、見事な3D戦闘シミュレーションがあります。
- Blair Castle
13世紀築の白いハイランドの要塞で、ヨーロッパ最後の私設軍隊である Atholl Highlanders が駐屯しています。30の部屋が700年にわたるスコットランド史をたどります。
- Glencoe
スコットランドで最も劇的なグレンで、1692年の Campbell-MacDonald 虐殺の舞台です。Three Sisters の稜線や Buachaille Etive Mor のピラミッド峰は、英国を代表する景観のひとつです。
- Fort William
ブリテン最高峰ベン・ネヴィスへの玄関口で、標高は1,345 m。Jacobite Steam Train は毎年夏の朝、Glenfinnan Viaduct を渡って Mallaig へ向かって出発します。
- Culloden
英国本土で最後の戦い、1746年4月16日。ボニー・プリンス・チャーリーの軍は1時間足らずで壊滅し、各連隊が倒れた場所には氏族の墓碑が立っています。
- Inverness
ネス川沿いのハイランドの中心都市。Loch Ness は南へ10 km、Urquhart Castle の遺跡は見応えがあり、Cairngorms は東へ広がっています。
