South America
Chachapoyas and Kuelap Northern Peru
Peru
Distance
190 km
Duration
2-3 days
Best Season
May-September
This northern Peru loop links the colonial highland town of Chachapoyas with the hilltop fortress of Kuelap, then continues through cloud-forest viewpoints and small Andean villages. Expect steep switchbacks, dramatic scenery, and one of Peru’s most distinctive pre-Inca archaeological landscapes.
Practical notes
Mountain roads around Chachapoyas are winding, narrow, and prone to fog and landslides in the wet season. Keep plans flexible and avoid night driving; a 4WD is not required, but extra time is wise on all transfers.
