西暦79年に2つの都市を埋めた火山の影のもと、90 kmにわたって、ヘルクラネウムの保存状態の良いローマ時代の家々、ポンペイの驚くほど保存された通り、ベスビオ山そのものの火口縁、そして崖の上に広がるソレントのレモン畑を巡り、湾の向こうにはアマルフィ海岸が見渡せます。

- Naples
ピザ発祥の地であり、世界最大の考古学博物館の本拠地で、ポンペイから運び出されたものをすべて所蔵しています。スパッカナポリは、バロックの華美さの中を一直線に旧市街を貫いています。
- Herculaneum
ポンペイよりも親密で保存状態も良く、火砕流によって店にあった木製家具や食料が炭化しました。発掘されたのは3分の1だけで、残りは現代のエルコラーノの地下で眠ったままです。
- Pompeii
西暦79年にそのまま凍結された、11,000人が暮らしたローマ都市全体。被害者の石膏型、原形をとどめる売春宿のフレスコ画、石畳に刻まれた車輪の跡が、今も頭上にそびえる火山の下にあります。
- Mount Vesuvius
ヨーロッパ本土で唯一活動中の火山です。標高1,281 mの火口縁までの30分の歩きで、湯気を上げるカルデラとナポリ湾全体を見渡す、目のくらむような景色が楽しめます。
- Sorrento
ナポリ湾の上の崖の上にあるレモン畑の町で、タッソ広場からは水の向こうにベスビオ山が見えます。カプリ島とアマルフィ海岸へ向かうフェリーは、崖下のマリーナ・ピッコラから出発します。
