White Desert and Bahariya Oasis
Egypt
This desert road trip begins in Cairo and runs west to Bahariya Oasis, then into Egypt’s surreal White Desert, where chalk towers, mushroom rocks, and wind-carved plains glow gold at sunset. It combines a sealed highway approach with short, guided desert sections and overnight camping under clear Sahara skies.

Travel advisory
A licensed local guide is strongly recommended, and many parts of the White Desert are only practical with a 4WD convoy. Carry extra water, cash, and fuel; mobile coverage is limited outside Bahariya and the desert camps. Check access rules and weather before departing, as sandstorms can close tracks quickly.
