- Yogyakarta
Begin in Java's cultural hub, where palace lanes, batik streets, and busy food stalls set the tone. Use it as the launch point for the volcano climb east.
- Prambanan Temple
See soaring Hindu spires rising from flat rice fields outside the city. It is one of Java's most striking temple complexes and a classic first stop.
- Madiun
A practical overnight stop in inland East Java with easy access and simple travel services. The pace slows here before the road turns toward the mountains.
- Mount Bromo
Climb into a volcanic sea of sand for dawn views over smoking cones and the Tengger caldera. The landscape feels stark, raw, and otherworldly.
- Probolinggo
A gateway town for Bromo with plenty of roadside services and a busy East Java feel. It works well as a reset before heading farther east.
- Bondowoso
This highland town sits between coffee country and the Ijen volcanic zone. Cooler air and mountain scenery make it a good staging point.
- Paltuding Ijen Trailhead
Reach the trailhead for the climb to Ijen's crater rim and sulfur lake views. Start early for the best light and the most comfortable temperatures.
- Ijen Crater
Finish at one of Indonesia's most famous volcanoes, where turquoise water and sharp crater walls create a dramatic finale. Banyuwangi lies just beyond for the onward leg.
