まさにアルプスの壮観そのもの、Route des Grandes Alpes はフランスアルプスをジュネーブ湖のほとりからフレンチ・リビエラまで横断し、ヨーロッパでも最も標高の高い舗装道路のいくつかを含む16の山岳峠を登ったり下ったりします。このルートの建設にはほぼ30年を要し、Vanoise、Queyras、Mercantour の3つの国立公園を通り抜け、最初の峠からモンブランの眺望が楽しめます。

- Thonon-les-Bains
ジュネーブ湖の南岸にある温泉地で、ルート最北端の地点。崖の上の旧市街から港へはケーブルカーで下ります。
- Chamonix
モンブランの麓、標高4,808 mのヨーロッパ最高峰。エギーユ・ディ・ミディのロープウェイは3,842 mまで達し、メル・ド・グラース氷河は年間90 m後退しています。
- Col de l'Iseran
標高2,770 mでアルプス最高の舗装峠であり、Grande Route の目玉です。山頂の礼拝堂から望むヴァノワーズ山塊の景色は圧巻です。
- Col du Galibier
標高2,645 mのツール・ド・フランスで有名な登坂路。20のヘアピンカーブがモーリエンヌ渓谷へと下り、頂上にはツール創設者アンリ・デグランジュの記念碑があります。
- Briançon
標高1,326 mにあるヨーロッパで最も高い都市で、UNESCO登録のヴォーバンの城壁がルイ14世のために設計され、5つのアルプスの谷の分岐点を守っています。
- Barcelonnette
ウバイユ渓谷の人里離れた町で、驚くほどメキシコの魂を持つ場所です。19世紀にメキシコから戻った移民たちが裕福になり、アルプスでもここだけの豪華な邸宅を建てました。
